Lieselotte Trail in Männlichen, Switzerland

The beautiful Bernese Oberland region in Switzerland has a very fun cow-themed hike called Lieselotte Trail (Lieselotteweg in German). The Lieselotte Trail is available to hikers from summer to the end of autumn when the ski season is not in session. You can reach it by going up Männlichen, a mountain that soars 2,222 meters above sea level.

The Lieselotte Trail begins from the mountain called Männlichen, and you will work your way down the valley toward the direction of Grindelwald. The trail ends in Holenstein, where you can also take a cable car back to Grindelwald or hike further if you still have not yet had enough.

Kids and adults alike can enjoy the Lieselotte Trail and its fun stops. A total of 13 stations are located along the route. As soon as a child has completed their card as well as brought it back to the center after it has been completed, they will be given a gift.

Overview: Männlichen

Grindelwald and Wengen are both within easy reach of a spectacular mountain called Männlichen. With fantastic views of the Eiger, the Mönch, as well as the Jungfrau, coming here is such a treat.

You can hike from Männlichen to many different places, including Kleine Scheidegg, Eiger Glacier, Wengen, and Holenstein, among others.

Männlichen to Holenstein

By taking a gondola from either Grindelwald or Wengen, you will be able to reach the starting point of the Trail in Männlichen. The Grindelwald – Männlichen Gondola can be reached by taking the train to Grindelwald Terminal. The Wengen – Männlichen Gondola is a short walk from Wengen’s Train Station.

You will navigate the Lieselotte Trail as you make your way from Männlichen to Holenstein. The trail is designed to lead downhill. Alternatively, you might be able to do it in the opposite direction by climbing up instead of down.

In case it is your decision to start your hike from the middle station called Holenstein and work your way up to the summit of Männlichen, you will have the chance to take in some of the most stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges such as the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau as opposed to going away from them. It will be a great treat for the children to be able to enjoy the fun playground at the summit

The scenery along the way down is spectacular, with breathtaking views of Grindelwald Valley and other mountains in the Bernese Alps to be enjoyed along the way. 

Lieselotte the Cow

During the Lieselotte Trail, you will be accompanied by a cow called Lieselotte, a cow who hails from the region of Westfalen, Germany. You will be able to see everything that she saw while on her adventure in the Alps, and everything that she experienced.

As part of your experience, you will have the opportunity to blow the Alphorn, a musical instrument associated with Switzerland, as well as try to milk a cow. It will also be possible for you to play or even try the long jump if you wish to do so.

Männlichen for Families

There’s still more to do with your family in Männlichen and the surrounding areas if the hike wasn’t enough. Here are more things you can do in this family-friendly place with your kids. 

• Männclichen Playground: This playground is located in Männclichen, directly beside the Grindelwald – Männlichen Mountain Station. It has a fantastic balancing area, a huge cow with a slide, and many other play elements.
• Royal Walk: The Royal Walk is an easy walk that offers spectacular views of the Bernese Oberland region from Männlichen’s peak. It is also relatively easy and short, so you may want to consider doing that as well.
• Apple Cake Trail: The Apple Cake Trail (Öpfelchüechliweg) from Holenstein until Brandegg where you can learn more about apples.
• Pfingstegg: Nearby Pfingstegg has a toboggan and a fly line that might appeal to older children.
• Chamois Trail: The Chamois Trail (Gemsenweg) from Männlichen to Wengen follows the slope that leads from Männlichen to Parwengi. It pays homage to the herds of chamois that continue to graze on the steep slope between Männlichen and Wengen.
• Winter: The Jungfrau Ski Region Grindelwald – Wengen offers 160 kilometers of slopes for those who wish to do some skiing or snowboarding.

Thirteen posts on the Lieselotte Trail around Männlichen are sure to delight the whole family. Observing the kids play was enjoyable. But even better was watching the fantastic views of Grindelwald Valley while watching the kids play. Everyone can participate in this activity.

It is important to note that the trail is not stroller-friendly. In most cases, parents with babies and toddlers carried their children in hiking backpacks.

Lieselotte Trail was a huge hit with our kids, and we’re looking forward to returning soon. Two different gifts were given to them – one was a cookie and the other was something to play with. It is on my kids’ bucket list to do this trail every year.
