Kugelweg Trail Fun in Meiringen-Hasliberg

Meiringen-Hasliberg is a popular mountain region in the Bernese Oberland. There is the main town in Meiringen and most mountain activities are located in Hasliberg above Meiringen. Located near Interlaken, Brienz, and Grimsel, it’s also a convenient base for exploring the region. Moreover, it is close to Melchsee-Frutt in Obwalden.

From Bidmi to Reuti, kids can enjoy the Kugelweg Trail and its ball tracks. A total of 12 ball stations are located along the route. The gorgeous views of Lake Brienz and the Bernese Alps will make this hike enjoyable for young and old alike.

Overview: Meiringen-Hasliberg Region

The town of Meiringen is part of the Haslital area, which is part of the Jungfrau region. It lies between the Grosse Scheidegg, Brunig, Susten, and Grimsel pass in the heart of the Alps. Hasliberg is situated between 600 meters and 2,500 meters above sea level within the Bernese Oberland tourist resort Meiringen-Haslital. 

In both summer and winter, the Haslital region offers a wide range of family-friendly activities, sports, and cultural events, including many that are accessible via Meiringen-Hasliberg. Among the most popular pastimes in the Haslital region are hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and local via ferrata.

The cable car on Meiringen brings people up to Reuti. From Reuti, you can take the next gondola up to Bidmi. The price of your ticket depends on where you start (Meiringen or Reuti) and how far you will travel. Hiking trails of varying difficulty can be found on the Hasliberg plateau.

There is no doubt that Meiringen is very touristy and popular with families with children. Even though the mountain itself isn’t overly impressive, it does offer amazing views of the lake and the nearby Bernese Alps.

At Meiringen-Hasliberg, many people enjoy going down the Kugelweg Trail.

Kugelweg Trail

There are many themed trails in Switzerland featuring local animals such as cows and marmots. Nevertheless, this one is an incredibly fun one since it features various ball tracks called Kugelweg in German. Kugelweg Trail begins at the Bidmi mountain station and ends at Reuti mountain station, where you can park your car or take the bus.

In the valley station, you can purchase a ball for CHF 3. There is a wide selection of colors to choose from. They normally have red, green, and blue balls, along with colorless wooden balls. You are now ready to play with your ball after receiving it.

You will have the opportunity to play with the various ball tracks along the way. A few of them are straightforward, while others have little flaps that can be modified to change the direction of your ball. There is no puzzle to solve, nor is a map required. The signs are well-marked, so you just need to follow them.

A specific color is assigned to each ball station, as well as the name of the company that donated or designed the track. The majority of these were provided by local businesses. There are 12 ball stations in total.

Walking takes about an hour, but if you play with the ball tracks, you can easily add another 30 to 60 minutes.

Meiringen-Hasliberg for Families

There’s still more to do with your family in Meiringen if the hike wasn’t enough. Here are more things you can do in this family-friendly place with your kids. 

• Muggestutz Zwergenspielplatz Bidmi: This playground is located in Bidmi and was opened in the fall of 2022. Treehouses, balancing areas, a small pond, and more make this playground one of the coolest I’ve seen.
• Muggestutz Dwarf Trails: Two more fun theme trails about dwarves from Mägisalp to Bidmi (5 kilometers) and from Käserstatt to Lischen (3 kilometers)0
• Bathing Lake Hasliberg Wasserwendi: In addition to bathing fun, the Hasliberg bathing lake offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. It is located right next to the valley station of the Twing-Käserstatt gondola. Summer is a perfect time for guests and locals to meet by this bathing lake with amazing views. 
• Scooter Riding: Known as Trotti Bike in German, these scooters can be rented in Mägisalp for rides to Bidmi (15 minutes away by bike). The scooter is suitable for children over the age of 8 who can ride a bike. You can rent helmets if you didn’t bring your own.
• Monster Scooter Riding: It is similar to riding a scooter but with bigger wheels. The Monster Scooter (or Monster-Trotti as it is known in German) can be rented and used along the Alpstrasse road from Käserstatt to Lischen. Approximately 15 to 20 minutes will be required to complete the four-kilometer route. As long as the child can ride a bike and is 120 cm or taller, they can rent a monster scooter.
• Minigolf Hasliberg Wasserwendi: Wasserwendi offers a free 18-hole mini golf course for tourists with the Haslital Tourist Card.
• Bike Park in Mägisalp: There are small bicycles available for children to play with beside the mountain restaurant in Mägisalp during the summer months.
• Meringues Baking: Every Wednesday, you can see and learn how to bake meringues at Frutals Konditorei und Bäckerei from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. For this event to take place, there must be at least 10 children registered in the tourist center.
• Other activities for families in the region also include the Train Models in Meiringen, a Crime Trail (Krimispass) in Meiringen, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Nature Museum Oberhasli, Museum der Landschaft Hasli, an Outdoor Pool in Meiringen, and a Pump Track in Hasliberg Goldern.
• Winter: The Meiringen-Hasliberg Ski Resort offers sixty kilometers of slopes for those who wish to do some skiing or snowboarding.

Twelve posts on the Kugelweg Trail around Hasliberg are sure to delight the whole family. For me, it was enjoyable watching the kids play with the tracks. Everyone can participate in this activity.

It is important to note that the trail is not stroller-friendly. In most cases, parents with babies and toddlers carried their children in hiking backpacks.

I highly recommend eating lunch or dinner at Hotel Reuti after completing the hiking trail. Both times we have eaten here, it has been such a beautiful restaurant with incredible food and attentive service.

Kugelweg Trail was a huge hit with our kids, and we’re looking forward to returning soon. We did the hike for the second time, and I’m sure we’ll do it again.
