Lenk has a large playground known as the AlpKultur® Spielplatz Lenkerseeli (AlpKultur® Playground near Lenkerseeli). Lenkerseeli is a beautiful, protected lake right beside the playground. It has drop-dead gorgeous views.
Through this play area, Alpine culture is promoted and brought to the village. Families can choose from a wide variety of play elements at this great playground. They even have an Alphorn in here which is a musical instrument consisting of a several-meter-long wooden natural horn used in the Swiss Alps.
With a total area of 7,000 square meters, there is enough space for the children to run around. In addition, you can enjoy the setting near Lenkerseeli, a small lake with mountains surrounding it.

Play Elements inAlpKultur® Spielplatz Lenkerseeli
In this huge playground, you can find the following play elements for children:
- An Alp Cottage – Also called Alphüttli, it is a small cottage which mimics a real alp cottage from the Swiss Alps
- Petting Zoo – A small little place with petting animals
- Hanging Bridge – A hanging bridge which goes up a tiny hill and hangs in-between two elevated little hills. Very cute.
- Flying fox – For those who love sliding the zipline
- Slides, swings, and a tunnel
- Climbing Area – Near the barefoot walking trail is a climbing area for children.
- Barefoot Walking Trail – A small walking trail with various stones, wood, and things you see in nature. You can remove your shoes and walk on this short trail. It is located near the climbing elements.
- Hedge Labyrinth – Near the kiosk and train station, the hedge labyrinth is quite tall. It is easy and fun to go around. As it is quite tall, I would recommend accompanying smaller children at the beginning until they feel confident enough to go by themselves.
- Mini-Train – A mini-train runs daily from Spring until Autumn multiple times per day.
Strubeli Bähnli: The Mini-Train
The first small train at the AlpKultur® Playground was inaugurated by the Strubeli Bähnli on the 8th of October 2011. It was built with a lot of passion, professional assistance, and volunteer effort from the Strubeli Bähnli society. To keep it going, the group still needs many private donations and sponsorships.
By virtue of its family-friendly status, Strubeli Bähnli received a distinction from the Swiss Tourism Board (Schweizer Tourismus-Verband). This distinction confirms its excellent quality and adds to the enrichment of AlpKultur® Spielplatz Lenkerseeli as a family-friendly destination.
Train Route and Opening Hours
The train route is 400 meters long and has two steam locomotives. The ride goes around the playground at a slow pace, so it’s perfect for young children.
As long as the weather permits, the train runs every day from May until October. In 2021, the opening hours were 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM, and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. It runs every 15 minutes. One ride costs CHF 2.
Children’s Show in Summer (Kasperlitheater)
The Kasperlitheater (a children’s show) takes place every Monday from July to mid-August. The event is free but is limited to 40 attendees. It takes place in the Alp Cottage (Alphüttli).
Picnic and Grill Areas
The playground has a number of picnic areas. They have the possibility to grill as well. There are multiple benches and sunshades.
Kiosk Lenkerseeli Restaurant
Those who did not bring anything can also find a restaurant near the lake. The Kiosk Lenkerseeli has a small menu with drinks and food that can be ordered from shortly before lunchtime and later.
They also have toilets available in case necessary.
Summary
AlpKultur® Spielplatz Lenkerseeli in Lenk is one of the largest and most interesting playgrounds we have ever seen. A family can easily spend a whole day here because there are so many things to keep the children entertained. Furthermore, it has enough space to accommodate many families without feeling crowded at all.
In addition to the train ride, children can climb, crawl, slide, and walk barefoot on the trail. They can run, jump, and do all kinds of things.
The nearby Lenkerseeli is NOT a bathing lake. The lake is a protected area, and its sole purpose is for viewing.
Despite this, the playground has plenty to offer. You should check it out the next time you visit Lenk im Simmental with your family.
