Learning About Senses
There are a variety of exhibits that are on display permanently. What I really liked here is that you can interact and learn from what is presented. Among the various topics related to senses and human perception are the following:
- Sight – You can find a variety of optical illusions to explore the nature of vision. During our last visit, they had a temporary exhibit about colors. It was interesting to see how the eye perceives color in a variety of instances and how illusions can trick you.
- Hearing – You can find a variety of musical instruments such as gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, strings, and metal rods. You will have to be careful not to bang the gong too loud as it can damage your hearing.
- Smell – You can find a “smell tree” where they have inserted various samples with different smells. You can guess what the object inside is based on what you smell.
- Touch: You can find some large blue jars that you can touch. You can guess what the object hidden is inside by reaching inside with your hand. You can also remove your shoes and try the barefoot path. It is a short trail where you can get to try various natural surfaces with your feet after you remove your shoes and socks. This will allow direct contact with your feet and the ground, providing an interesting sensory experience.
- Balance and Movement: You can try a variety of simple instruments where you can feel balance and movement.
Aside from learning about the exhibits inside Sensorium, they also have a play area outside. You can expect a swing that you will have to use with a second person, as well as a seesaw that has metal balls that make a sound. I believe that the swing comes from Klangweg in Toggenburg. There are also other play elements where you can balance and learn.
All in all, Sensorium Bern provides a variety of hands-on exhibits and activities that allow visitors to engage and experience various senses themselves.
Why Visit Sensorium?
Visiting Sensorium is a learning experience that is fun for both children and adults alike. With all their interactive exhibits, you can explore the world of senses, from sight and sound to touch and balance. The only thing I missed was the world of taste but that is understandable.
In addition to Sensorium’s permanent exhibits, they also have a temporary one on the topmost floor. While we were there, it was focused on color – how we perceive color, how we mix colors (light and paint), how colors work, how colors can lead to illusions, and more. They do change the exhibits regularly so you might find some other temporary exhibit when you visit.
Once you are done visiting Sensorium, you can also head outdoors where they have a playground. It is spread out across several play elements. There were a lot of children while we were there so our kids had to wait it out every now and then before they could play.
Sensorium is in the heart of the Swiss countryside, surrounded by hills and overlooking the Bernese Alps. It is no longer in the city. But the journey to get there is serene and beautiful.

With lush greenery and mountains surrounding it, Sensorium is beautifully situated in a picturesque setting. The highlight is definitely the opportunity to try out many exhibits and learn from them. Even if we have been here before, coming back after two years is still fun. I suspect that you can even come here multiple times a year and still enjoy the exhibits just like your first time.
